April 2017 – April 2018

Mijn hoofd loopt over.

Alle stress is verdwenen.

Again, traveling with our RV to the USA

April 2017 – April 2018

My head swims. What has to be done?  Dick is maddening about me when I ask him again or everything is arranged. He just does what needs to be done and ask me or I ever noticed that not everything was finished in time.

I know, it is me. I constantly want confirmation that everything is done and ready before we leave. Regularly I look at the computer. It is not to find out where we have to go, our route for the coming year is ready, but to find out what still has to be done, to write anyone connected with the shipping or insurance and to get confirmation that all is running well. But I don’t need to worry because we did everything that is needed and we have permission to drive in the USA. When the moment is there to do something, it is early enough. Unfortunately, this is not my style. So I make lists, I write letters, everywhere I have piles of clothes and other things that has to be packed in the RV. Next week our RV will be in several workshops.

And hopefully the result will be a well prepared RV, suitable to make a

28791 miles journey. I will be glad when we drop off our RV in the harbour of Antwerp, Belgium on April 7th. Then I only have to concentrate on the packing of the luggage we will take with us on the plane to Baltimore, MD.

The new bike cover

Seabridge, Dusseldorf told us that the RV should be “empty” if you look inside. As a result, we cannot put our bikes in the walkway. This creates a “headache file”, of course only for me and not for Dick. After our “Cito garage” changed four tires, we try our new bike cover. It is slightly too long but it fits. Thereafter Dick is wrestling to get our bikes in the garage, with and without front-wheel. Unfortunately it won’t work, even if the spare tire is removed. No way we can put our pushbikes in here. I am at my wits’ end (Tita) and Dick decide to put the bikes on our bed. At the same time he makes an ingenious construction for the door. Removing the door- handle and replaces it by a round lockbolt. The result is that the door of bathroom and sleeping area can be closed. Great, we can place our bikes on the bed, use the closet space behind the door (it is a locked room now) and the most important point: the living area of the camper is “empty inside” This headache file can be closed.

The window isolation is OK

The holiday with my sister Hannah and auntie Ank in Andalusia, Spain, did well to me. All my stress is gone.  In the week I was on holiday Dick arranged everything that still had to be done, without me, panting in his neck. When it appears that our window isolation fits well, we only have to pack our RV. Because of the clever construction Dick made I can put away a lot of stuff behind the door and the rest of the things goes into boxes in the garage at the back.

Dick fixes our two bikes on the bed in a way that this bed with bedding looks only 9 inches higher. Finally it takes a day of cleaning and packing to complete our RV.

On Friday April 7, 2017 we drive to the port of Antwerp. To another terminal than the two previous times we went to the USA and this terminal is not so easy to find. Our navigation is too old and leads us on not yet existing roads along the harbours of Belgium. But with some detours we finally end up in the right place at the Euro terminal.

The snow blizzards in New York a few weeks ago, slowed down all ships of the Atlantic Container Line so our RV will be transported with another ship. As a result the man behind the counter of the check-in terminal cannot find our RV in the computer but finally Dick can drive our RV through the gates in the huge port area. Unfortunately I am not allowed to come with him but the camper is placed near the fence at the entrance so I can still watch how Dick delivers the RV.

I am not happy about the fact that we have to leave our RV with the keys in the ignition, but as Dick says, it’s there way of handling, so we drive back home. I have visions of refugees packed in our RV and cannot deny that I am a little bit stressed!

Behind the fence in the harbour

Fortunately for me, my sister Hannah celebrates her 60st birthday on Saturday. It is very sociable and I am back again in my normal rhythm.
